We offer sustainable wild and farmed fish products at our fishmongers
In 2023, we became the first distribution company in Spain to certify our fishmongers under MSC and ASC standards, offering our customers fresh products with the MSC and ASC ecolabels to ensure the sustainability of fish and seafood. This milestone reinforces our commitment to protect marine resources and ensure their long-term sustainability. The MSC blue and ASC green labels are an effective way of informing consumers of the sustainable origin of the products they buy, thus providing them with greater confidence when making their selections.
In addition to fresh fish products, we continue to sell frozen, canned, pre-cooked, and any other type of processed seafood products bearing both seals, thus expanding the range of seafood products that can be found in our establishments.
In line with our commitment to sustainable fishing, in 2023, we also received the Seas Forever Award from the MSC for our track record in sustainable fishing in both own brand and manufacturer brands.
We look after the ocean
Since 2011, we have a sustainable fishing policy at El Corte Inglés. This purchasing policy applies to all fish products, whether fresh, frozen, canned, pre-cooked or processed in any way, including farmed products, and outlines the principles that govern the relationship with our suppliers in order to guarantee the sale of products from sustainable wild and farmed fish sources.
Furthermore, In 2018, we signed a framework agreement with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), committing to continue launching sustainability projects that favour the biodiversity of our seas and other production sectors.
We protect species
At El Corte Inglés, we're guided by Malta's marine conservation commitments. In our supermarkets—including Hipercor and Supercor—we offer a wide variety of products to help reduce pressure on the most highly demanded species. At the same time, we have removed some of the species at greater risk of overexploitation from our offer. With this, we want to continue contributing the health of our seas and the sustainability of the fishing sector in our country.
